What exactly do our cattle eat?

They are 99.9% grass-fed and finished!

Our cattle graze exclusively on our biodiverse Louisiana pastures.

The cattle forage on our diverse pastures for plants such as sorghum multiple types of clovers, plantain, chicory, small grains, brassicas, radishes, turnips, collards, buckwheat, cow peas, sunn hemp, sunflower, okra. There is the smorgasbord of native browse and grass species endemic to our area!

We also use soybean meal as a protein supplement in the winter, only if we have to. Doing so allows the cattle to better utilize the dormant (low protein low nutrient) forage during the winter months that otherwise would be indigestible for them. The microbes in their rumens need a minimum amount of protein in order to effectively digest the forages they consume. We use small amounts of soybean meal because it is very high in protein and allows them to utilize the low protein forages we have on the farm during the winter.

Commonly Asked Questions About Ground Beef Storage

How long does ground beef last?

  • Ground beef will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • For longer storage it can be frozen for up to 6 months. It can be frozen for longer and remain safe to eat but reduces in quality the longer it’s frozen.

How should I store ground beef in the fridge?

  • Put ground beef in an insulated bag when coming home from the store or picking up from the farm.
  • Put the meat in the fridge right away.
  • Keep ground beef in the coldest part of your fridge. This is typically toward the back of the fridge. If possible, store it on the lowest shelf to prevent its juices from leaking onto other foods.
  • Avoid storing it in the door, as the temperature in this area fluctuates more.
  • Store cooked ground beef in a shallow, airtight container in the fridge for three to four days.

How should I freeze ground beef?

  • Our ground beef comes vacuum sealed and frozen in conveniently portioned 1 lb bags. This makes freezing easy. Simply put the meat in the freezer, and it will keep for up to 6 months. The meat will remain safe in the freezer longer but may begin to lose quality after that point.
  • Yes, you can freeze cooked ground beef too : )

How should I thaw ground beef?

  • Move the beef to the fridge the day before you plan to use it.It will thaw in the fridge overnight.
  • To quickly thaw, put the meat in a water-tight plastic bag and submerge in cold water, changing the water every 30 minutes.

How can I tell if your ground beef has gone bad?

Use your senses to tell if your raw ground beef is past its prime:

  • Look for discoloration or mold. Good ground beef should be bright red and not brown. Obviously, if it has mold, it should go directly into the trash.
  • Smell your ground beef. If it has a rancid, tangy scent, that’s a sign it’s past its expiration date.
  • When you touch it, it should feel cool, smooth, and a little moist. Spoiled ground beef can feel sticky or slimy.

Still unsure? When in doubt, throw it out.
